At first the college was named as ‘Nilamani Routroy N.A.C. College’, having Arts Stream (I.A.) with compulsory subjects English and M.I.L. and optional subjects like History, Economics, Logic, Odia and Political Science. The Commerce Stream (I.Com.) opened later from the next academic session.

The Governing Body later renamed the college as Hirakud College, Hirakud, under Resolution No. 5 dated December 23, 1982. Subsequently, the college expanded to offer Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) and acquired the status of a Degree College in the year 1981-82.

Established in 1979, Hirakud College, Hirakud is a distinguished educational institution located on the outskirts of the industrial township of Hirakud in proximity tothe world’s longest earthen dam, the Hirakud Dam. It is situated in the Sambalpur district of Odisha. Since its inception, the college has been committed to fulfilling the educational aspirations of students, many of whom come from agrarian backgrounds and socially and economically disadvantaged communities, mostly SCs and STs. As a co-educational institution, Hirakud College has become a preferred choice for families seeking quality higher education for their children.

Over the past thirty-seven years, Hirakud College has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving institution with a substantial differently-abled friendly campus and modern infrastructural facilities which include major buildings like an Administrative Block, Conference Hall, Smart Classrooms, Well-equipped Library, Computer Lab, New Commerce Block, span over a campus of 10 acres. The college offers multi-faculty 07 Undergraduate Programmes in Economics, Education, English, History, Odia, Political Science, and Commerce. In addition, it offers Intermediate (+2) Programmes in Arts and Commerce on its second campus.

The college has various active wings of NSS and YRC programs that provide a platform for active student participation in community service and charitable activities.

The college boasts of a rich legacy of producing alumni who have excelled in various fields such as administration, politics, entrepreneurship, social service, and industry.
